asmâkam – the quest
An exhilarating and vibrant dance-drama!
Multi-lingual movement, haunting music and humorous yet poignant drama portray the story of a British Asian woman’s trials and tribulations. Laugh, cry and be entertained as you witness anarchy and harmony side by side as two cultures collide.
In their quest to find harmony between two cultures (Asian and British), Surrey-based Indian classical dancer Shalini Bhalla and Mumbai-born Payal Ahuja have choreographed this dynamic new dance duet.
Using dance movement from Bharata Natyam (Indian classical dance), Bollywood dance and Western contemporary dance, as well as the spoken word, the dancers depict women in the Indian cultural arena, and subsequently in Western culture. When these two worlds meet, they experience conflict and tension, which when resolved ends in harmony and celebration.
This duet has been choreographed to specially commissioned music, composed by singer/songwriter Eleanore Duggan who has woven together an exciting mixture of Western and Indian-influenced instrumental music (with a hint of Bollywood), as well as incorporating Indian classical phrases and poetry.
An exploration of Britain’s evolving cultural identity - this promises to be a visual and aural treat that will make Indian dance accessible to all.
The asmâkam team have just returned from Edinburgh Fringe Festival where they performed the show for seven nights. The performances were very well received.
