Shivani Bhalla has worked and lived with the Samburu tribe for more than six years.
The Samburu people are nomadic pastoralists who although related to the Maasai, are a distinct ethnic group. They live north of the equator merging into the deserts of the Northern Frontier District. Families live in “manyattas” or encampments, and their lives revolve around their livestock which is a sign of wealth for the tribe.
The Samburu people dress in very traditional clothing which consists of bright red material – and colourful beaded jewellery which forms the basis of the products sold by SamBuru Designs.
